With your dark lashes

Hafez

With your dark lashes you have made a thousand breaches in my faith;

come, so that I may gather a thousand pains from your languid eye.

O companion of my heart, who have let your friends slip from memory,

may there never be a day when I sit without remembering you.

The world is old and has no foundation; alas for this killer of Farhad,

whose spells and tricks have made me weary of my sweet life.

From the heat of the fire of separation I am drenched in sweat like a rose;

bring me, O night wind, a breath from that one's cap.

This passing world and the lasting one are a ransom for the beauty and the saqi,

for I see the sovereignty of the world as a mere follower of love.

If the Friend chooses another in my place, the Friend is the judge;

may it be forbidden me to choose my own life in place of the Friend.

The nightingale has sung good morning; where are you, saqi? Rise,

for the thought of last night's dream is making an uproar in my head.

On the night of my departure I will go from my bed to the palace of the houris

if, at the hour I give up my life, you are the candle at my pillow.

The tale of longing that has been set down in this letter

is surely without error, for Hafez dictated it to me.
