With the long chain of your curl
Hafez
O you who have come with the long chain of your curl,
may your chance be good, for you have come to comfort the madman.
For one hour do not be proud; change your habit,
since you have come to ask after the needy.
I would die before your tall figure, in peace or in war,
since either way you were made to be proud.
With your ruby lip you have mixed water and fire;
may the evil eye stay far, for you are a great conjurer.
Bravo to your soft heart, that to earn some merit
you have come to pray over the one your glance has killed.
What does my piety weigh against you, who, to plunder my heart,
have come drunk and dishevelled into the chamber of secrets?
She said, "Hafez, your cloak is stained with wine again;
have you turned back from the creed of this company?"
