Why should I not go home?
Hafez
Why should I not set my heart on my own homeland?
Why should I not be the dust at the head of my friend's lane?
Since I cannot bear the grief of strangeness and exile,
I will go to my own city and be my own king.
I will become one of the intimates within the pavilion of union;
I will be one of the servants of my own lord.
Since the course of life is not clear, it is better, at least,
that on the day it ends I am in my beloved's presence.
Of my heavy-sleeping fortune and my disordered affairs,
if I have a complaint, I will keep my own counsel.
My calling has always been love and rendi;
I will strive once more and busy myself with my own work.
Perhaps the grace of eternity will be your guide, Hafez,
or else I will be ashamed before myself for ever.
