Why seek good conduct from us?

Hafez

Why do you seek good conduct from us? We have called the drunkards in;

in the age of your drunken narcissus eye, we have bid safety farewell.

Open the tavern door for me, for nothing opened at the khanqah;

believe it or not, this was the word, and we have said it.

O saqi, I have fallen ruined by your eyes, but

to a trial that comes from the beloved we have said a thousand welcomes.

If you do not forgive me, you will feel regret in the end;

keep this in mind, and remember where in your service we said it.

I said your stature was a boxwood; it brought such shame

that we made this comparison, and spoke this slander.

My liver has turned to blood like a musk-pod; I deserve no less

as the price of speaking to your curl of the musk of Cathay.

You turned to fire, Hafez, but it did not catch in the friend;

it was as if we told the breeze the tale of the rose's broken promises.
