Whoever caught your scent on the breeze

Hafez

Whoever caught your sweet scent on the morning breeze

heard a familiar word from a familiar friend.

O king of beauty, cast an eye on the beggar's state,

for this ear has heard many tales of the king and the beggar.

I refresh the senses of my soul with musky wine,

for it caught the smell of hypocrisy from the cloister's cloaked one.

The secret of God, which the wayfaring gnostic told no one,

I wonder where the wine-seller heard it.

O Lord, where is a confidant of secrets, so that for one moment

my heart could tell what it has said, and all that it has heard?

My heart, which always gave others their due, did not deserve this:

to hear unworthy words from its own consoler.

If I was barred from the head of her lane, what of it?

In the rose garden of this age, who ever caught the scent of faithfulness?

Come, saqi, for love is calling aloud

that whoever told our story heard it from us as well.

It is not only today that we drink wine under the cloak;

a hundred times the tavern elder has heard this tale.

It is not only today that we drink wine to the sound of the harp;

ages ago the dome of heaven heard this sound.

The sage's counsel is pure rightness and goodness itself;

blessed is the one who heard it with a willing ear.

Hafez, your task is to offer your prayer, and nothing more;

do not trouble yourself over whether it was heard or not.
