Ghazal · 14th century

When the breeze loosened her curl

Hafez

When the breeze broke loose her ambergris-scattering curl,

every broken one it touched found its soul made new.

Where is a kindred spirit, that I may set out in full

what the heart endures through the days of separation?

Time fashioned an image of your face from a rose petal,

but out of shame before you hid it in the bud.

You are asleep, and love has found no shore;

God be praised for this road that has no end.

Will the beauty of the Kaaba perhaps make amends to the pilgrims,

for the souls of the living-hearted burned in its desert?

To this broken house of sorrows, who will bring

news of the Joseph of the heart from the well of her chin?

I will seize the tip of that curl and hand it to the master,

for heartless Hafez has burned from its tricks and wiles.
