What love has done again

Hafez

Did you see, O heart, what the grief of love has done once more,

how the heart-stealer left, and what she did to the faithful friend?

Ah, what a game that sorcerer narcissus stirred up!

Ah, what that drunken one did to the sober!

My tears took on the colour of twilight from the beloved's unkindness;

see what my unpitying star has done in this affair.

A flash of lightning shone at dawn from Leyli's dwelling;

alas, what it did to the harvest of heart-wounded Majnun!

Saqi, give me a cup of wine, for it is not known

what the painter of the unseen has done behind the veil of secrets.

The one who painted this crystal circle so full of figures,

no one knew what he did in the turning of the compass.

The thought of love set the fire of grief in Hafez's heart and burned it;

see what the old friend has done to the friend.
