Ghazal · 14th century

What intoxication is this

Hafez

What intoxication is this that has come our way, I do not know;

who was the saqi, and where did he bring this wine from?

What mode is this minstrel playing, who knows every station,

that in the middle of the ghazal he brings in a familiar song?

You too, take wine in hand and set out for the open country,

for the singing bird has brought a sweet-toned instrument.

O heart, do not complain, like the bud, of a closed-up affair,

for the morning wind has brought the knot-untying breeze.

May the coming of the eglantine bring goodness and blessing;

the violet is glad and has come happily; the jasmine has brought purity.

In bringing good news, the east wind is Solomon's hoopoe,

which brought tidings of joy from the rose garden of Sheba.

The cure for our heart's weakness is the saqi's coquetry;

lift your head, for the physician has come and brought the remedy.

I am the disciple of the Magian elder; do not be hurt with me, sheikh,

for you made the promise, and he kept it.

who launched his attack on me, a dervish with a single robe.

Now heaven willingly serves Hafez,

since he has taken refuge at the door of your fortune.
