What has become of the friends?

Hafez

We see friendship in no one; what has become of the friends?

When did friendship end? What has become of those who loved?

The water of life has turned murky; where is Khezr of the blessed step?

Blood drips from the rose branch; what has become of the spring breezes?

No one says, "There was a friend who kept the rights of friendship";

what has befallen the grateful? What has become of the friends?

For years no ruby has come out of the mine of kindness;

what has become of the sun's warmth and the work of wind and rain?

This land was a city of friends, the soil of the kind-hearted;

when did kindness come to an end? What has become of its princes?

The ball of grace and favour has been thrown onto the field;

no one rides out into the field; what has become of the horsemen?

A hundred thousand roses opened, and not one bird's cry rose;

what has happened to the nightingales? What has become of the songbirds?

Venus plays no sweet music; has her lute been burned?

No one has a taste for drunkenness; what has become of the wine-drinkers?

Hafez, no one knows the secrets of God; be silent.

Whom are you asking what has become of the turning of the times?
