Trust in the kindness of God

Hafez

At dawn I was telling the wind the story of my longing;

a voice came: "Trust in the kindness of the Lord."

The prayer of morning and the sigh of night are the key to the treasure you seek;

go by this road and this way, and you will be joined with your beloved.

The pen has no tongue to tell the secret of love;

the story of longing is beyond the reach of words.

O Joseph of Egypt, whom kingship has made proud,

ask your father at last: where has a son's love gone?

This old, coquettish world has no mercy in its nature;

why ask after its love? Why set your hopes on it?

A homa of high rank like you: how long this greed for bones?

Alas for that shade of favour you have cast on the unworthy.

If there is any profit in this market, it is with the contented dervish;

Lord, make me rich through poverty and contentment.

To the verse of Hafez of Shiraz they dance and preen,

the dark-eyed ones of Kashmir and the Turks of Samarkand.
