Tonight is the Night of Power

Hafez

That Night of Power the people of retreat speak of is tonight;

O Lord, in which star lies this influence of good fortune?

So that unworthy hands may seldom reach your tresses,

every heart, from every ring of them, is praying, "O Lord, O Lord."

I am slain by the well of your chin, for on every side

a hundred thousand souls bow their necks to the collar of your chin.

My royal rider, for whose face the moon holds up the mirror,

the crown of the lofty sun is the dust of his horse's shoe.

See the sheen of sweat on his cheek, for the swift, hot sun

has had a fever every day in longing for that sweat.

I will not give up the beloved's ruby lip and the cup of wine;

ascetics, hold me excused, for this is my creed.

At the hour when they saddle the back of the breeze,

how can I ride with Solomon, when my mount is an ant?

The one who shoots arrows at my heart with a sidelong glance,

Hafez's soul is nourished by his smile beneath the lip.

The water of life drips from the beak of its eloquence:

this crow, my pen, God bless it, how lofty its spring!
