This fresh, laughing rose

Hafez

O Lord, this fresh and laughing rose that you entrusted to me,

I entrust to you, against the envious eyes of the meadow.

Though he has gone a hundred stages from the lane of faithfulness,

may the harm of the turning sky stay far from his soul and body.

If you reach Salma's dwelling, O morning breeze,

I hope you will carry a greeting to her from me.

With courtesy, loosen the musk-pod of that black curl:

it is the home of dear hearts; do not throw it into disorder.

Tell her: my heart has a claim of faithfulness on your down and your mole;

hold it in honour within that ambergris-twisting lock.

In the place where they drink wine to the memory of her lips,

base is the drunkard who is still aware of himself.

Honour and wealth cannot be stored up at the tavern door;

whoever drinks this water throws his belongings into the sea.

Whoever fears weariness, the sorrow of love is not lawful to him:

either my head at her feet, or my lips upon her mouth.

Hafez's poetry is all the finest verses of knowing;

praise be to his captivating breath and the grace of his words.
