The voice of the nightingale

Hafez

If you will not drink wine to the voice of the nightingale and the dove,

how can I cure you? The last remedy is the branding iron.

Lay by some store of the colour and scent of spring,

for the highwaymen of Bahman and Dey are coming close behind.

Now that the rose has thrown off her veil and the bird has cried "hu, hu",

do not put down the cup: what are you doing? Hey!

When did the splendour of kingship and beauty ever last?

Of Jamshid's throne a story remains, and of Kay's crown.

To hoard treasure for heirs to squander is unbelief,

say the minstrel and the saqi, by the ruling of the drum and the reed.

The age gives nothing that it does not take back;

seek no generosity from the mean, for what they have is nothing.

They have written on the portico of the Garden of Refuge:

"Whoever bought the world's flattery, woe to him."

Generosity is gone; I will cut my words short. Where is the wine?

Pour, to the joy of the spirit and soul of Hatam Tai.

The miser will not catch the scent of God; come, Hafez,

take the cup and be generous, and I will stand surety for you.
