The violet told the rose

Hafez

Last night the violet spoke to the rose and gave a pleasing sign:

"The twist I have in the world, a certain someone's forelock gave me."

My heart was a treasury of secrets, and the hand of fate

shut its door and gave the key to a heart-stealer.

Like a broken thing I have come to your court, for the physician

directed me to the healing balm of your kindness.

May his body be sound, his heart glad and his mind at ease,

who, when the chance came, gave help to one without strength.

Go and treat yourself, you who give advice:

wine and a sweet beloved, whom have they ever harmed?

She passed by wretched me and said to the rivals,

"Alas, my poor Hafez, what a soul he gave up!"
