The unaware are bewildered

Hafez

The unaware are bewildered at our gazing upon beauty;

I am as I have shown myself; the rest is for them to know.

The wise are the centre point of the compass of being, but

love knows that in this circle they are spinning, lost.

My eye is not the only place where her face shines forth;

the moon and the sun turn this same mirror.

God bound our covenant with the sweet-mouthed ones;

we are all servants, and these are the lords.

We are penniless, and we long for wine and the minstrel;

alas, if they will not take the woollen cloak in pledge!

Union with the sun does not come to the blind bat,

for before that mirror even those with vision are bewildered.

Boasting of love, and complaining of the beloved? What a false boast!

Lovers like these deserve separation.

Perhaps your dark eye will teach me the art,

for not everyone can be both modest and drunk.

If the wind carries your scent to the garden of spirits,

reason and soul will scatter the jewel of being as an offering.

What does it matter if the zahid does not understand Hafez's rendi?

The demon flees from those who recite the Qur'an.

If the young Magians come to know our thoughts,

from now on they will not take the Sufi's cloak in pledge.
