The Seven Domes
Nezami Ganjavi
The astronomer had matched the colour of each dome
to the temper of its star.
The dome that fell to Saturn’s share
was hidden in black, like musk.
The one whose substance came from Jupiter
was sandalwood in colour and in ornament.
The one whose compass Mars had drawn
had a red jewel in its making.
The one that brought tidings of the sun
was yellow: from what? From a sash of gold.
The one that took its hope from the beauty of Venus
had a face as white as the face of Venus.
The one whose portion came from Mercury
was turquoise, the colour of victory.
And the one to whose tower the moon had found its way
was green and flourishing from the king’s face.
A note for readers
In the Haft Peykar the architect Shideh builds King Bahram Gur seven domed pavilions, each coloured for one of the seven planets. Bahram visits one on each day of the week, dressed in its colour, and the princess who lives there tells him a story. Mercury’s line holds a pun: the dome is piruzeh-gun, ‘turquoise’, from piruzi, ‘victory’.
