The script you draw on the rose

Hafez

With this lovely script you draw on the rose of your cheek,

you strike a line through the page of the rose and the rose garden.

My tears, who sat veiled in the inner chamber of my hidden house,

you drag from beyond seven veils into the marketplace.

The morning breeze, slow-footed as it is, with the scent of your curl

you set to work every moment, bound in a chain.

Every moment, with the memory of that wine-red lip and drunken eye,

you drag me from my solitude to the vintner's house.

You said, "Your head will be tied to our saddle-strap";

that is easy, if you will take the trouble of this burden.

Against your eye and eyebrow, what plan can my heart make?

Ah, this bow you draw against me, sick as I am!

Come back, for this thorn keeps the evil eye from your face,

O fresh rose, you who pull your hem away from this thorn.

Hafez, what more do you ask of the world's bounty?

You drink wine, and you hold the beloved's curl.
