The scent of the sanctuary

Hafez

The scent of the sanctuary's bay trees came, and my longing grew;

may my dear life be a ransom for the dust at the Friend's door.

To hear the Friend's message is happiness and well-being;

who will carry my greeting to Su'ad?

Come to the evening of the strangers and see my tears,

like clear wine in a glass from Damascus.

When a bird of good omen sings from the tree of Arak,

let my dove's lament not be left out of its garden.

It will not be long before the day of separation from the beloved ends;

I have seen, on the hills of the sanctuary, the domes of tents.

Happy the moment you come in and I say to you, "Welcome:

your coming is the best of comings; you have alighted in the best of places."

Far from you, I have wasted away like a crescent moon,

though I have never seen your moon-like face in full.

And if I were called to paradise and broke my pledge to you,

my soul would know no pleasure, and sleep would not be sweet.

I hope to see you soon, with good fortune:

you glad in your command, and I in my service.

Like a string of lustrous pearls is your fine verse, Hafez,

which in its grace at times outruns the poetry of Nezami.
