The rose has come

Hafez

The rose has come, and nothing is sweeter than this:

that there is nothing in your hand but the cup.

Seize the time of gladness, grasp it,

for the pearl is not always in the shell.

Count it a gift and drink wine in the rose garden,

for the rose will not be here another week.

O you who have filled the golden cup with ruby,

be generous to one who has no gold.

Come, O shaykh, and from our wine-house

drink a wine not found in Kawsar.

Wash the pages, if you study with us,

for the knowledge of love is not in any book.

Listen to me, and bind your heart to a beauty

whose loveliness does not depend on ornament.

Grant me, O Lord, a wine without the after-ache,

that brings with it no trouble to the head.

With all my soul I am the servant of Sultan Oveys,

though he may not remember his servant.

By his world-adorning crown, even the sun

is not so worthy of a diadem.

Only one finds fault with the verse of Hafez

who has no grace in his own nature.
