The robe of kingship
Hafez
O you on whose tall figure the robe of kingship sits true,
the crown and the signet take their beauty from your noble jewel:
Each moment the sun of victory is made to rise
by your moon-bright face beneath the royal cap.
The bird of fortune shows itself wherever
the homa of your sky-touching parasol casts its shade.
Among the rules of law and wisdom, with their thousand disagreements,
not one fine point has ever escaped your knowing heart.
The water of life drips from its beak of eloquence,
that sweet-voiced parrot, I mean your sugar-chewing pen.
Though the sun in the sky is the eye and lamp of the world,
it is the dust beneath your feet that gives its eye light.
What Alexander sought and the age would not give him
was one draught of clear water from your life-giving cup.
In the sanctuary of your presence no one needs to state his need;
no one's secret stays hidden from the light of your judgement.
O king, in his old age Hafez is acting young again,
in hope of your life-giving, sin-erasing pardon.
