The retreat of the dervishes

Hafez

The highest garden of paradise is the dervishes' retreat;

the source of true grandeur is service to the dervishes.

The treasure of solitude, which holds wondrous talismans,

is opened by the merciful glance of the dervishes.

The palace of paradise, where Rezvan serves as doorkeeper,

is only one view from the meadow of the dervishes' delight.

That by whose light the black heart is turned to gold

is an alchemy found in the company of the dervishes.

That before which the sun lays down its crown of pride

is a majesty found in the splendour of the dervishes.

A fortune that has no fear of the blight of decline,

hear it plainly, is the fortune of the dervishes.

Kings are the qibla of the world's needs, but

the cause of it is their service at the court of the dervishes.

The face of the goal that kings seek in their prayers

shows itself in the mirror of the dervishes' faces.

From end to end stretches the army of oppression, but

from first to last, the hour belongs to the dervishes.

O rich man, do not peddle so much arrogance, for your

head and your gold are sheltered by the dervishes' blessing.

The treasure of Qarun, which is still sinking under wrath,

you will have read, sank through the dervishes' jealous honour too.

Hafez, if you want the water of everlasting life,

its source is the dust at the door of the dervishes' retreat.

I am the servant of the gaze of this age's Asaf, who

has the bearing of a lord and the nature of the dervishes.
