The old world will grow young again

Hafez

The breath of the east wind will scatter musk;

the old world will grow young once more.

The Judas-tree will pass a carnelian cup to the jasmine;

the narcissus's eye will turn to gaze upon the anemone.

This tyranny the nightingale has borne from the grief of parting —

it will go crying out to the pavilion of the rose.

If I went from the mosque to the tavern, do not find fault:

the sermon's session is long, and time will run out.

O heart, if you put off today's pleasure until tomorrow,

who will stand surety for the ready capital of life?

In Sha'ban, do not let go of the cup, for this sun

will be gone from sight until the night of the Ramadan feast.

The rose is precious: count its company a gift,

for it came into the garden by this way, and by that way will go.

Minstrel, this is a gathering of friends: sing ghazal and song.

How long will you say, "Thus it went, and thus it will be"?

Hafez came for your sake into the realm of being;

take one step to bid him farewell, for he will soon be gone.

A nightingale held in its beak a rose petal of lovely colour,

and with that petal and its song it made sweet, piteous laments.

A nightingale held a rose petal

A star shone out and became the moon of the gathering,

became friend and companion to our startled heart.

At dawn the nightingale told its tale to the east wind:

"See what love for the rose's face has done to us!"

At dawn the nightingale told the breeze
