The news has come that spring is here

Hafez

The good news has come that spring is here and the grass has sprung;

if my allowance arrives, it will be spent on roses and wine.

The bird's whistle has risen: where is the duck-shaped flask of wine?

The nightingale has cried out: who drew back the rose's veil?

What delight can he find in the fruits of paradise

who has never bitten the apple of a beauty's chin?

Do not complain of sorrow, for on the road of seeking

no one reached ease who did not bear some hardship.

Pick a rose today from the moonlike saqi's face,

for the violet down has sprung around the garden's cheek.

The saqi's glance has carried off my heart so completely

that I have no heart left to talk or listen to anyone else.

I will burn this patched cloak, many-coloured as a rose,

for the elder who sells the wine would not buy it for a single sip.

Spring is passing; O dispenser of justice, take note,

for the season has gone, and Hafez has not yet tasted wine.
