The meeting came

Hafez

The meeting came within reach, and kisses and embrace too;

I give thanks to fortune, and to the times too.

Go away, ascetic: if my fortune is truly mine,

my cup will be in my hand, and the beloved's curl too.

We find no fault with anyone for drunkenness or rendi;

the ruby lip of the fair ones is sweet, and smooth wine too.

O heart, I bring you good news: the morals officer is gone,

and the world is full of wine, and of wine-drinking beauties too.

To hand the mind over to scattering is not wise;

ask for a book of verse, and bring the flagon too.

Scatter the draught of her lip on those who lie in love's dust,

so the dust turns ruby-coloured and musk-scented too.

Gone is the time when the evil eye kept watch from ambush;

the enemy has left the scene, and the tears have left my eyes too.

Since all creation lives by your fragrance,

O sun, do not take your shade from us either.

Since the freshness of the tulip and the rose is the bounty of your beauty,

O cloud of grace, rain on me, a thing of dust, too.

Hafez has become the captive of your curl: fear God,

and fear the justice of the Asaf with Jamshid's power too.

Borhan of state and faith, by whose vizier's hand

the right hand has become a mine in our days, and the left a sea too.

Remembering his radiant judgement, heaven at dawn

offers up its soul, and scatters the stars as gifts too.

The ball of the earth is carried off by the polo-stick of his justice,

and this high-raised, blue-domed fortress too.

Your swift-reined resolve sets in motion

this steady centre and the high-circling sphere too.

As long as from the workings of heaven and the turning of its wheel come

the change of month and year, of autumn and of spring too,

may his glorious palace never be empty of great men,

and of cypress-tall, rose-cheeked saqis too.
