The huma of fortune

Hafez

The huma of fortune's summit will fall into our snare

if you should chance to pass by our dwelling.

Like a bubble I will toss my cap into the air for joy

if a reflection of your face should fall into our cup.

On the night the moon of our desire rises from the horizon,

perhaps a ray of its light will fall upon our roof.

Since even the wind is not admitted to your court,

when will the chance arise for our greeting to reach you?

When my soul became an offering to her lip, I was imagining

that a drop of its clear water would fall upon my palate.

The image of your curl said, "Do not make your soul the means,

for of this kind of prey a great many fall into our snare."

Do not leave this door in hopelessness; cast a faal:

perhaps the lot of fortune will fall in our name.

Whenever Hafez speaks of the dust of your lane,

the scent of the soul's rose garden reaches our senses.
