The fast is over and the Eid has come
Hafez
The fast has gone aside, the Eid has come, and hearts have risen;
wine has come to a boil in the wine-store, and wine must be called for.
The turn of the heavy-souled sellers of piety has passed;
the time of rendi and of the rends' merrymaking is here.
What blame is there for one who drinks such wine?
What fault is this, what folly? And what wrong is this?
A wine-drinker in whom there is no pretence or show
is better than a piety-seller made of pretence and show.
We are not rends of hypocrisy or companions of deceit;
He who knows all secrets is witness to this state.
We perform what God requires and do harm to no one,
and what they say is not lawful, we do not call lawful.
What harm if you and I drink a few cups of wine?
Wine is the blood of the vines, not your blood.
What kind of fault is this, that any damage should come of it?
And if it did, what then? Where is the person without fault?
