The dust of your road

Hafez

O you, the dust of whose road is worth the blood-price of China's musk,

the sun is raised in the shade of your cap's brim.

The narcissus is flirting beyond all bounds: come out walking,

O, may I be the ransom for the ways of your dark eyes.

Drink my blood, for no angel, before such beauty,

would have the heart to write down a sin of yours.

You are the cause of the rest and sleep of all the world's people,

and so the edge of the eye and the heart became your resting place.

Every night I have dealings with every single star,

out of longing for the light of your moonlike face.

The friends who sat together have all been parted;

there is only us, and the threshold of your sheltering fortune.

Hafez, do not give up hope of grace, for in the end

the smoke of your sighs will set fire to the harvest of grief.
