The dust of my beloved's feet

Hafez

If I could have the dust from the sole of my beloved's foot,

I would draw a line of it on the tablet of my sight.

In hope of your embrace I have drowned, and I hope

the wave of my tears will carry me to the shore.

If her moth comes to me asking for my life,

like a candle, in that same breath, I will give up my soul.

Do not turn your head from my faithfulness today, and think

of that night when, in sorrow, I raise my hands in prayer.

Your two black curls, to console the lovers,

gave a promise of rest, and took my rest away.

O wind, bring me a breath of that wine,

for that healing scent will drive off my hangover.

If the Friend will not assay the alloyed coin of my heart,

I will count out ready coin from my eyes at once.

Do not shake your hem free of me, who am dust, for after I am gone

the wind will not be able to carry my dust from this door.

Hafez, since her ruby lip is dear to me as life,

the moment I bring my soul to my lips will be worth a lifetime.
