The daughter of the vine

Hafez

Friends, the daughter of the vine has repented of keeping veiled;

she went to the muhtasib and did the work with his permission.

She has come from behind the curtain into the gathering; wipe away her sweat,

so the companions will not ask why she stayed away.

Give the good news, O heart, for once again love's minstrel

has played a drunken tune and found a cure for the hangover.

Not seven waters, nor even a hundred fires, will remove the colour

that the wine of the grape has left on the zahid's cloak.

The bud on the rosebush of my union blossomed in its breeze;

the sweet-singing bird made merry with the petal of the red rose.

Hafez, do not let go of humility, for the envious one

lost honour, wealth, heart and faith through his pride.
