The candle became a moth

Hafez

To the lamp of your face the candle has become a moth;

with your state before me, I have no care for my own.

Reason, which used to order chains for the madmen of love,

has gone mad itself at the scent of the hyacinth of your curl.

If my life was lost to the wind for the scent of your curl, what of it?

A thousand precious lives are a ransom for the beloved.

Startled with jealousy, I fell to the ground last night

when I saw my beloved in a stranger's hand.

What pictures we painted, and none of them was any use;

all our charms have become a tale to her.

On the fire of her lovely face, in place of wild rue,

who has ever seen any seed but her black mole?

For the good news, the candle gave up its life to the breeze in one breath,

when its warrant came from the candle of your face.

While the Friend's lip goes round, I have made a vow

never to speak of anything but the wine cup.

Do not talk of the madrasa and the khanqah, for once again

longing for the tavern has entered Hafez's head.
