The Birds Assemble

Attar

The birds of the world held an assembly,

all there were, the seen and the unseen.

All of them said: ‘In this present age

no city anywhere is without its king.

How is it that our realm has no king?

We can go on no longer without a king.

It is right that we help one another

and go together in search of a king.

For when a country is without a king,

no order or discipline remains in its army.’

A note for readers

These couplets open the main story of The Conference of the Birds: the birds gather and agree that they need a king. The hoopoe answers that they already have one, the Simorgh, and offers to lead them to him. The excerpt gives the first five couplets of the scene.

One could speak for a lifetime of the beloved’s tresses;

do not fret that there are no themes left.
