The beloved went away

Hafez

The beloved went away and did not tell the lovesick;

she gave no thought to the friend in the city or the companion on the road.

Either my fortune abandoned the way of kindness,

or she did not travel the high road of the Path.

I said, "Perhaps with weeping I can make her heart kind";

it was so hard that it left no mark on her heart of stone.

Do not mock, for the restless bird of my heart

has not put the longing for love's snare out of its head.

Whoever saw your face kissed my eye,

for what my eye did was not done without insight.

I stood waiting to offer my life to her like a candle;

but she never passed our way, like the dawn breeze.
