Spring and the rose

Hafez

Spring and the rose have grown joy-stirring and vow-breaking;

for joy of the rose's face, pull sorrow out of your heart by the root.

The morning breeze arrived; the bud, in devotion,

went out of itself and tore its shirt upon its body.

Learn the way of sincerity from water, pure of heart;

seek freedom, in uprightness, from the cypress of the meadow.

See, from the breeze's mischief, the curls around the rose;

see the twist of the hyacinth's tresses on the jasmine's face.

The bride of the bud has come from the inner chamber under a lucky star;

she steals heart and faith exactly by the way of beauty.

The cry of the frenzied nightingale and the call of the thousand-songed bird

have come out of the house of sorrow to meet the rose.

Speak of the company of the fair and of the cup of wine,

by Hafez's word and the ruling of the skilful elder.
