Solitude is sweet

Hafez

Solitude is sweet if my beloved is truly mine,

not that I burn while she is the candle of every gathering.

I would not take that seal of Solomon for anything

if now and then the hand of Ahriman is upon it.

O God, do not allow that, in the sanctuary of union,

the rival should be the confidant, and deprivation my lot.

Tell the huma never to cast its shadow of honour

on a land where the parrot is valued below the kite.

What need is there to describe longing? The burning of the heart's fire

can be known from the burning in one's words.

Longing for your lane does not leave my head; yes,

the wanderer's bewildered heart is always with his homeland.

Even if Hafez grows ten tongues, like the lily,

like the rosebud, his mouth is sealed before you.
