Show your face, and tell me to give up my soul
Hafez
Show your face, and tell me to give up my soul;
tell the fire, before the candle, to seize the moth's life.
Look at our thirsty lips, and do not hold back the water;
come to the head of your slain one and lift him from the dust.
Do not abandon the dervish because he has no silver or gold;
in grief for you, count his tears as silver and his pale face as gold.
Play the harp and tune it; if there is no aloeswood, what of it?
Take love as my fire, my heart as the aloes, my body as the censer.
Come into the dance of sama, throw the cloak from your head and dance;
or else go to a corner and pull our cloak over your head.
Pull the wool off your head and drink the pure wine;
stake your silver, and with gold take a silver-limbed one in your arms.
Say, "Let the Friend be my friend, and both worlds my enemy";
say, "Fortune, do not turn your back," and take the face of the earth as your army.
Do not wish to leave, my friend; stay with us a moment;
seek joy by the edge of the stream, and take a cup in your hand.
Count me as gone from your side, and from the fire and water of heart and eye,
count my face as yellow, my lips as dry and my lap as wet.
Hafez, adorn the gathering, and tell the preacher:
"Look at my gathering, and give up the pulpit."
