Saqi, the shade of the cloud

Hafez

Saqi, here is the cloud's shade, and spring, and the edge of the stream;

I will not say what to do: if you have a heart, say it yourself.

No scent of sincerity comes from this painted show; rise,

and wash the Sufi's stained cloak with pure wine.

The world is mean by nature; do not lean on its generosity;

O you who have seen the world, do not look for steadfastness from the mean.

I give you two pieces of advice; listen, and carry off a hundred treasures:

"Come in through the door of joy, and do not run down the road of finding fault."

In thanks that you have reached spring once again,

plant the root of goodness and seek the road of true understanding.

If you seek the beloved's face, make your mirror worthy of it,

or else the rose and eglantine will never bloom from iron and brass.

Open your ears, for the nightingale is crying out:

"Sir, do not fall short; breathe in the rose of grace."

You said a scent of hypocrisy comes from our Hafez;

bravo for your breath, for you caught the scent well.
