Rise, let us seek an opening

Hafez

Rise, let us seek an opening at the tavern door,

sit on the friend's road, and seek our heart's wish.

We have no provision for the road to the sanctuary of union, unless

we beg some provision at the tavern door.

Though our blood-stained tears run freely, still,

to carry our message to him, we seek someone pure of nature.

Let the sweetness of your sorrow's brand be forbidden to our hearts

if we seek justice against the cruelty of your love's sorrow.

The dot of your mole cannot be drawn on the tablet of sight,

unless we seek ink from the pupil of the eye.

The heart begged, with its life, for one coquettish word from your sweet lip;

with a sugar-laugh your lip said: “Let us look for a higher bid.”

So that the frenzied heart may keep a perfumed copy,

we seek a draft of the script of your ambergris-scented down.

Since your sorrow can be found only in a glad heart,

in hope of your sorrow we seek a glad mind.

How long will you sit at the college door, Hafez?

Rise, let us seek an opening at the tavern door.
