Remember when I lived at your lane
Hafez
Remember when my dwelling was at the head of your lane,
and my eye took its light from the dust of your door.
Just like the lily and the rose, through pure companionship,
what was in your heart was on my tongue.
When the heart was learning meanings from the elder of reason,
love would explain whatever he found hard.
Ah, the cruelty and oppression in this house of snares!
Ah, the burning and the longing in that gathering!
It was in my heart never to be without the Friend;
what can be done? My striving and my heart's were in vain.
Last night, remembering my companions, I went to the tavern;
I saw the wine-jar, its heart full of blood, its feet in the clay.
I wandered long, to ask the cause of the pain of separation;
the mufti of reason was out of his reason on this question.
Truly, the turquoise ring of Bu Eshaq
shone beautifully, but its fortune was brief.
Did you see the laughter of the strutting partridge, Hafez,
that never noticed the claw of the falcon of fate?
