Remember the one who left

Hafez

May the one be remembered who, setting out, did not remember us,

and did not gladden our grief-worn heart with a farewell.

That young one of happy fortune who wrote the marks of grace and favour,

I do not know why he did not set his old servant free.

I will wash my paper robe in tears of blood, for the heavens

did not guide me to the foot of the banner of justice.

In hope of an echo that might somehow reach you, my heart

has wailed in these mountains as Farhad never did.

Since you withdrew your shade from the meadow, the bird of dawn

has not made its nest in the folds of the boxwood's tresses.

It would be fitting if the messenger breeze learned its work from you,

for the wind has never moved more nimbly than this.

The pen of creation's adorner will not draw the picture of desire

for whoever has not acknowledged this God-given beauty.

Minstrel, change the mode and play the road of Iraq,

for by this road the beloved went, and did not remember us.

The songs of Hafez are ghazals of Iraq;

who has heard this heart-burning tune and not cried out?
