Ramadan Has Come

Rumi

The month of Ramadan has come, O friend with the face of the moon:

tie up the table-cloth and open the way that leads above.

You who stray everywhere, it is time that you came back;

look towards the sweet-maker: how long will you go seeking sweets?

A single sight of the sweet-maker will make you so sweet

that honey itself will say to you, ‘I am your dust, my lord.’

Your bird, from eating and surfeit, is stuck inside this egg:

come out of this egg, so that its wings may open.

A nightingale held in its beak a rose petal of lovely colour,

and with that petal and its song it made sweet, piteous laments.

A nightingale held a rose petal

A star shone out and became the moon of the gathering,

became friend and companion to our startled heart.

A star shone out

At dawn the nightingale told its tale to the east wind:

"See what love for the rose's face has done to us!"

At dawn the nightingale told the breeze
