Play a tune

Hafez

Play a tune to whose music one can heave a sigh;

recite a poem with which one can drain a heavy cup.

If one can lay one's head on the beloved's threshold,

one can raise the cry of high honour to the sky.

Our bent stature may seem a small thing to you, but

from this bow one can shoot an arrow into the eyes of enemies.

The secrets of love's play do not fit in the khanqah;

the Magian cup of wine can be drunk only with the Magians.

The dervish has no provision for the sultan's palace;

here we are, with an old cloak one could set on fire.

The people of insight stake both worlds on a single glance;

it is love, and the first stake is laid on the coin of the soul.

If the fortune of union with you is ever to open a door,

with this hope one may lay one's head on the threshold for years.

Love, youth and the way of the rend are the sum of all desire;

when the meanings come together, one can strike the ball of eloquence.

Your curl has become the highwayman of well-being, and no wonder:

if you are the highwayman, a hundred caravans can be robbed.

Hafez, by the truth of the Quran, turn back from show and pretence;

perhaps in this world one can still strike the ball of pleasure.
