Our eyes look only on your face

Hafez

The pupil of our eye looks on nothing but your face;

our bewildered heart calls to mind no one but you.

My tears put on the pilgrim's robe to circle your sanctuary,

though from the blood of my wounded heart they are never for a moment pure.

Let it be bound in snare and cage like a wild bird,

the bird of the Lote-tree of heaven, if it does not fly in search of you.

If the penniless lover scattered the counterfeit coin of his heart,

do not blame him, for he has no power over ready cash.

In the end his hand will reach that tall cypress of yours,

whoever does not fall short in resolve while seeking you.

I will never speak of the life-giving breath of Jesus,

for he is not as skilled as your lip in giving life to the spirit.

I, who do not even sigh in the fire of my passion for you,

how can anyone say my heart cannot bear the brand?

On the first day I saw the tip of your curl, I said

that the tangle of this chain will have no end.

The wish to be joined with you is not in Hafez's heart alone:

who is there whose mind does not hold the wish to be joined with you?
