Ghazal · 14th century

One night let us raise our hands

Hafez

One night let us raise our hands and make a prayer,

and find from somewhere a cure for the sorrow of your absence.

The sick heart has slipped from our hands; friends, some help,

so we may bring the physician to its side and find a remedy.

The one who took offence without cause, struck me with the sword and left,

bring him back, for God's sake, so we may make our peace.

The root of joy has withered; where is the road to the tavern,

so that in its water and air we might grow and flourish?

O heart, seek help from the minds of the rendan; otherwise

the work is hard, and we may make some mistake.

The shadow of a small-spirited bird does nothing;

let us seek the shadow of the auspicious huma.

My heart has slipped out of tune; where is sweet-voiced Hafez,

so that with his words and ghazals we may make some music?
