O light of my eye, listen

Hafez

O light of my eye, there is a word; listen:

since your cup is full, give others to drink, and drink.

On the road of love there are many whisperings of the devil;

come forward and turn the ear of your heart to the angel's message.

The means of song is spoiled and no instrument of joy remains;

O harp, draw out a lament; O tambourine, cry out.

The rosary and the cloak will not give you the pleasure of drunkenness;

in this work, seek blessing from the wine-seller.

The old speak from experience; I have told you:

listen, my son, and heed the counsel, so that you may grow old and wise.

The hand of love has never set its chain on the clever;

if you want to draw the friend's curl, give up cleverness.

With friends there is no stinting of life or wealth;

a hundred lives be offered for the friend; heed the counsel.

Saqi, may your cup never be empty of clear wine;

cast an eye of favour on me, the dreg-drinker.

When you pass by merry in your gold-sprinkled robe,

promise one kiss to Hafez in his woollen cloak.
