Ghazal · 14th century

O holy beauty, who lifts your veil?

Hafez

O holy beauty, who draws the cord of your veil?

O bird of paradise, who gives you seed and water?

Sleep has left my eyes in this heart-burning thought:

whose embrace has become the home of your rest and sleep?

You do not ask after the dervish, and I fear you have

no thought of forgiveness, no care for a good deed's reward.

That languid eye has waylaid the hearts of lovers;

it is plain from this manner that your wine is strong.

The arrow your glance shot at my heart went astray;

let us see what your sound judgment will think of next.

Every cry and lament I made, you did not hear;

it is plain, my lovely one, how high your station is.

The spring of water is far from this desert; take care

that the demon of the waste does not deceive you with a mirage.

Let us see by what custom you will walk the road of age, O heart;

at any rate, the days of your youth were spent in error.

O heart-brightening palace, dwelling of intimacy,

O Lord, may the blight of the days never lay you in ruin.

Hafez is no slave who runs from his master;

make peace and come back, for I am ruined by your reproach.
