O graceful cypress of beauty

Hafez

O graceful cypress of beauty, who walk with such grace,

every moment lovers bring a hundred needs before your grace.

Blessed be your lovely face, for in pre-eternity

the robe of grace was cut to fit your cypress form.

Whoever longs for the ambergris scent of your curl,

tell him to burn like aloeswood on the fire of passion, and bear it.

The moth's heart burns from the candle, but

without the candle of your cheek my heart melts away.

The Sufi who had repented of wine in your absence

broke his vow last night when he saw the tavern door open.

The rival's taunts will not change my worth;

I am like gold, even if they put me between the jaws of the shears.

The heart that has learned the circuit of the Kaaba of your lane

is so taken with that sanctuary that it has no wish for Hejaz.

Why make my ablutions every moment in the blood of my eyes, when

without the arch of your eyebrow my prayer is not allowed?

Like wine he has risen again to the head of the jar, clapping his hands,

Hafez, who heard a secret last night from the saqi's lips.
