O God, Open the Bud of Hope

Jami

O God, open the bud of hope!

Show a rose from the eternal garden.

Make my garden laugh with the lips of that bud,

and with this rose make my senses fragrant.

In this house of trouble without comfort,

make me know your blessings.

Make my inmost mind dwell on gratitude,

make praise the habit of my tongue.

A note for readers

The opening couplets of Yusuf and Zulaykha, Jami’s retelling of the story of Joseph and the wife of his Egyptian master, completed in the 1480s as one of the seven masnavis of his Haft Awrang (Seven Thrones). Like most long Persian poems it begins with a prayer.

One could speak for a lifetime of the beloved’s tresses;

do not fret that there are no themes left.

A nightingale held in its beak a rose petal of lovely colour,

and with that petal and its song it made sweet, piteous laments.

became friend and companion to our startled heart.
