O Camel Driver, Go Gently
Saadi
O camel driver, go gently, for the peace of my soul is leaving,
and the heart I had with me is leaving with the one who stole it.
I am left behind, cut off from her, helpless and sick because of her;
you would say a sting, far from her, is going into my bones.
I said I would hide the wound within by tricks and spells;
it will not stay hidden, for blood is running over my threshold.
Hold back the litter, camel driver; do not hurry the caravan,
for with love of that moving cypress you would say my soul is leaving.
She goes, trailing her skirt; I taste the poison of loneliness;
ask me no more for a trace of me, for every trace is leaving my heart.
A note for readers
The opening couplets of one of Saadi’s best-known ghazals, spoken as the lover watches the beloved’s caravan depart. The refrain mi-ravad, ‘is going’ or ‘is leaving’, closes every couplet, and inner rhymes give the lines a song-like rhythm. The excerpt gives the first five couplets.
