Now the rose has come into the meadow

Hafez

Now that the rose has come into the meadow from nothing into being,

the violet has laid its head at its feet in prostration.

Drink the morning cup to the lament of drum and harp;

kiss the saqi's chin to the song of reed and lute.

In the rose's season do not sit without wine, beloved and harp,

for, like the days of life, it lasts a week, and the days are numbered.

With the rising of sweet herbs the earth has grown bright as the sky,

under an auspicious star and a fortunate ascendant.

From the hand of a delicate-cheeked beauty with the breath of Jesus

drink wine, and leave aside the tale of Ad and Thamud.

In the season of lily and rose the world has become like highest paradise,

but what use is that, when no one can stay in it for ever?

When the rose rides on the air like Solomon,

at dawn, when the bird begins to sing with the voice of David,

renew in the garden the rite of Zoroaster's faith,

now that the tulip has kindled the fire of Nimrod.

Call for the morning cup in memory of the Asaf of our age,

the vizier of Solomon's kingdom, Emad al-Din Mahmud.

May it be that Hafez's gathering, by the blessing of his care,

finds all that it desires ready at hand.
