Not worth a moment of grief

Hafez

The whole world is not worth spending a single moment in grief;

sell our cloak for wine, for it is worth no more than that.

In the lane of the wine-sellers they will not take it for a single cup;

what a prayer-mat of piety, not worth one goblet!

My rival scolded me: "Turn your face away from this door";

what has happened to this head of ours, that it is not worth the dust of the door?

The splendour of the royal crown, in which fear for one's life is folded,

is a charming cap, but not worth giving up one's head.

How easy the hardship of the sea seemed at first, for the scent of profit;

I was wrong: this storm is not worth a hundred pearls.

It is better for you to hide your face from those who long for you,

for the joy of conquering the world is not worth the grief of the army.

Like Hafez, strive for contentment and pass by the base world,

for a barley-grain of obligation to the mean is not worth two hundred maunds of gold.
